TWAS-UNICAL Fellowship Programme

TWAS, the academy of sciences for the developing world and the University of Calabria (UNICAL), Italy, offer fellowships to students from Haiti who wish to obtain an MSc degree in the areas of pharmacology/nutrition.

Duration: 2 years, extendable for 1 additional year.

Programme details

• TWAS-UNICAL Fellowships are tenable at the University of Calabria (UNICAL), Italy, for a period of 2 years, extendable for 1 additional year.
• Candidates can either be proposed by the Université d'Etat d'Haïti (UEH) or apply directly to UNICAL.
• TWAS will provide support for travel (one round trip in economy class), visa and related costs, health insurance, a lump sum of US$ 1,700 per year for local incidental costs, and excess luggage expenses upon completion of the fellowship (for stays longer than 12 months). 
• UNICAL will provide board and lodging at its residential centre. 
• The language of instruction at UNICAL is Italian.

Eligibility

Applicants for these Fellowships must meet the following criteria:

• be a maximum age of 35 years on 31 December of the application year;
• be permanent residents of Haiti;
• hold a BSc degree in a relevant field of the natural sciences;
• be willing to register at the University of Calabria (UNICAL);
• provide sufficient evidence of knowledge of Italian according to Italian regulations in order to obtain a student visa;
• not take up other assignments during the period of the fellowship;
• be financially responsible for any accompanying family member.

Submitting your application

The call for applications for the TWAS-UNICAL Fellowships is open until 31 July 2011.

• Applicants must apply online at www.unicaladmission.it (to start, click the button “Master degree with scholarship” on the right at the bottom of the web page). Applicants must be aware that UNICAL and TWAS will not accept applications submitted by any means other than via the online method.
• Official copies of academic degree certificates must be submitted. This documentation can either be in French or Italian.
• At the same time applicants should prepare the certified and translated copies of their degree certificates and transcripts.

• Applicants must pre-register at the Italian embassy when pre-registrations for Italian universities opens (usually in May), submitting the required documentation which must be in Italian. The closest Italian Diplomatic Representation is in the Dominican Republic:

• When providing documents to the Italian embassy in the Dominican Republic, the applicant should inform the embassy that s/he is applying for a TWAS-UNICAL fellowship in Italy. This should facilitate the embassy in giving the necessary student visa to the awarded candidates.

• Even if official copies of academic degree certificates are not requested by the Embassy they must be submitted to UNICAL. This documentation may be in French.

• If awarded, candidates must apply for a student visa in order to take up the Fellowship.
