Biography
Professor Gottlieb is a renowned chemist of natural products. Fascinated by the immense molecular diversity of the tropical flora, he introduced phytochemistry as a major discipline in Brazil, creating and coordinating many research groups. He has been responsible for the identification of diverse novel natural products and more than 100 graduate theses. He has published more than 660 papers and given more than 650 lectures. He received more than 30 awards (such as the Gra-Cruz da Ordem Nacional do Merito Cientifico), honorary degrees from 10 Brazilian Universities and one from Universitat Hamburg (Germany) and he is a member of many scientific academies. He is now retired from Universidade de Sao Paulo but continues to advance understanding of how nature works via original methods with a new interdisciplinary approach, the Quantitative Chemo-Biology.
