| Biography | | Dr. Arroyo is
Director of the Institute of Ecology and Biodiversity, University of Chile,
Santiago. Her research has focused on the conservation of biodiversity in
Mediterranean ecosystems and temperate forests of South America. Her work
allowed recognition of the central Chile biodiversity hotspot. She and her
colleagues succeeded in obtaining an agreement to conserve 63,000 hectares of
pristine forest lands in Tierra de Fuego. Her group has also studied
altitudinal trends in pollination mechanisms and plant breeding systems in the
Chilean Andes. She is a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences,
Fellow of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, and Honorary Fellow of the Royal
Society of New Zealand. She has won the President's Medal of the University of
Chile, the Amanda Labarca Condecoration, the BBVA Prize in Conservation Biology
Research and the Volvo Environment Prize. |
