| Biography | | Dr. Castilla is
Professor at the Facultad de Ciencias Biologicas, Pontificia Universidad,
Chile. He is an outstanding marine ecologist, with particular interest in
understanding the anthropic effects on ecological systems, a subject of
particular relevance to his native Chile. His research work has elucidated the
ecological role played by humans in marine ecosystems, and has helped in the
conservation and sustainable use of the extensive marine coastal resources of
Chile. His work has also called attention to the need for testing of ecological
hypotheses regarding the introduction of marine non-native species, as well as
the need fopr a paradigm shift for world fisheries. For these efforts, he has
been awarded the national recognition Medal of Chile. He is a Member of the
Chilean Academy of Science and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy
of Sciences. |
