| Biography | | Dr. Pavan was
educated at the University of São Paulo (DSc, 1944). He is Emeritus Professor at
the University of São Paulo and the University of Campinas, Brazil. His
previous positions include: Full Professor, University of São Paulo (1953-78);
Full Professor, University of Texas (1968-77); President, National Council for
Scientific and Technological Development, Brazil (1986-90); and Full Professor
of Genetics, State University of Campinas, Brazil (1978-89). He has been
honoured with several decorations including the Brazilian Great Cross, Natl. Order of Scientific Merit, the Prêmio Nacional de Genética,
and the Prêmio Moinho Santista (Biologia), Fundação Moinho Santista. His membership includes: Brazilian Acad. of
Sciences; Medical Acad. of Sciences of São Paulo; Lisboa Acad. of Sciences;
Pontifical Acad. of Sciences; Chilean Acad. of Sciences; and São Paulo Acad. of
