Biography
Dr. Radi's work on the cytotoxicity and pathophysiological effects of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species is of very high impact. He has proposed the use of hemoglobin and red blood cells as tools for studying the biochemistry of the reactive oxygen species, peroxynitrite. Along with his associates, he has been able to design, synthesize, and biologically characterize potential anti-atherogenic nitric oxide releasing tocopherol analogs. He is a member of the Uruguayan Society of Biosciences and Sec. Gen., Society for Free Radical Research in Biology and Medicine. He has been awarded, inter alia: TWAS Prize for Young Scientists in Biology in 1996; Roberto Caldeyro Barcia Award 1999; Pan American Society of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Lecture Award 2003; Guggenheim Fellowship 2003; and Howard Hughes Medical Inst. Intl. Res. Scholarship in 2000.
