| Biography | | Dr.
Patarroyo-Murillo is the Executive Director of the Fundación Instituto de
Inmunología de Colombia, Bogota. His
major research accomplishments include the development of the first chemically
obtained synthetic vaccine against a parasite and the first against Plasmodium
falciparum malaria. His laboratory is involved in developing quick, reliable
and sensitive tests for detection of pathogens such as malarial parasites, M.
leprae, M. tuberculosis, Leishmania, and others. He has recently advanced the
development of a blood-sample diagnostic tool to quickly screen for cervical
cancer caused by the virus HPV. Among the many awards and honours he has
received are the Sao Paulo State Prize in Exact Sciences for the Best
Scientists in Latin America, Brazil (1989) and, most recently, the Juniper
Serra prize by the Fundación Catedra. |
