MENDONÇA PREVIATO, Lucia (Brazil). b.17-2-1949. PhD, Professor, Instituto de Biofísica Carlos Chagas Filho Universidade Federale do Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. Mendonça Previato's scientific work constitutes a significant advance towards the development of chemo-and immunotherapies against Trypanosoma cruzi, a parasite responsible for Chagas disease. Her glycobiology studies have helped shed light on the molecular components involved in host cellpathogen interaction. A fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, she has won, among others, the 2007 TWAS Prize in Biology, and the UNESCO-L'Oreal Prize for Women in Science Prize in 2004.
