Biography
Dr. Allende is Professor at the ICBM, Faculty of Medicine and Research Vice Pres. of the Univ. of Chile. He has made pivotal contributions to the understanding of protein synthesis, was a pioneer in studying the mechanism of hormonal induction of amphibian oocyte maturation and has studied 2 ubiquitous protein kinases, CK1 and CK2, involved in the phosphorylation of key cellular proteins. He is a leader in science education and has established scientific networks in Latin America. His membership includes: 3 Academies of Sciences (Chile, Argentina, and Latin America); Director, ECBI project (Chilean Academy of Sciences & Ministry of Education); and Coordinator, Science Education Program, Inter American Network of Academies of Sciences and the Inter Academy Panel. His honours include Doctor h.c., Univ. of Buenos Aires, and the Grand Cross of Scientific Merit, President of Brazil.
