Biography
Dr. Barrantes obtained his MD (1968) and PhD (1973) at the University of Buenos Aires. He is Director of the Inst. of Biochemistry, Universidad Nacional del Sur (UNS), Bahía Blanca, and Full Professor of Biology, Biochemistry and Pharmacy at UNS. He was previously Joint Head of the Membrane Biophysics Unit, Max-Planck Inst. for Biophysical Chemistry in Germany and Principal Investigator of the Argentine Scientific Research Council. He has received awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Royal Society, UK (Guest Fellowship), Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Research Prize) and the Samojiri Daran Intl. Trust. His membership includes: New York Acad. of Sciences; Argentinian Assoc. for the Advancement of Sciences; Latin American Acad. of Sciences; Brazilian Acad. of Sciences; Argentine Society for Neurochemistry; and the European Acad. of Sciences.
