| Biography | | Dr. Bolívar-Zapata is
currently Professor of Molecular Biology at the National Autonomous University
of Mexico (UNAM). He was previously: Researcher at UNAM since 1978; Director of
the Research Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, later Institute
of Biotechnology, at UNAM from 1982-97; and Dean of Sciences at UNAM from
1997-2000. He was the first to demonstrate the possibility of expressing
mammalian proteins in bacteria, by developing the multipurpose cloning vehicle,
pBR322. His recent research has been in the area of bacterial metabolic
engineering. His honours include: National University Award, UNAM; Price of Asturia Award, Spain; Cecilio A
Robelo Prize, Mexico; Alfonso Herrera Medal, Puebla, Mexico; Presea Tlacaelel, Mexico; Luis Elizondo
Prize, Mexico; and Dr. hon. Causa from Liege University in Belgium. He is a
Member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences. |
