Biography
Dr. Cardoso de Oliveira was educated at the University of São Paulo where he obtained his BA (1952), Licentiate (1953) and PhD (1966). He is Visiting Researcher at the Center for Research and Graduate Studies on the Americas (CEPPAC), University of Brasilia (UnB). He was previously: Professor Emeritus and Professor of Anthropology, State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), 1985-90; Professor of Anthropology, UnB, 1972-84; Research Associate, Department of Social Relations at Harvard, 1971; President, Latin American Association of Anthropology, 1993-97; Vice President, Philosophy and Human Sciences Council of UNESCO, 1978-79. He was awarded Doc. h.c. from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the International Prize for the Study of Ethnology and Anthropology. He is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland.
