Biography
Dr. León-Portilla is Professor (Faculty of Philosophy and Letters) and Emeritus Researcher (Institute of Historical Research) at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). His previous positions include: Researcher and Director, Institute of Historical Research, UNAM; Director, Inter-American Indian Institute, 1960-66; and Member, Academic Board of Governors, National University, Mexico from 1975-86. He is a respected anthropologist and historian from Mexico who is recognized for establishing a methodology for the study of ancient indigenous codices and other texts in the Indian languages of Mexico. His honours include: Honorary doctorates; Elias Sourasky Prize, Government of Mexico; Permanent Delegate to UNESCO; Smithsonian Council, Washington, DC; and Bartolomé de las Casas Prize, Government of Spain. He is a Member of the National Academy of Sciences, USA.
