Biography

JORNADA, Joao A.H. (Brazil). b.1-6-1949. PhD, President & Professor of Physics, Inmetro (Brazilian National Metrology Institute), Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. Jornado has done outstanding research on phase transitions and super-hard materials under high pressures, leading to interesting new materials and new mechanisms of phase transitions, including the discovery of the hardest known oxide phase in SiO2 and important physical insights on the relation between high-pressure induced amorphization and negative thermal expansion. He is a member of the

Brazilian Academy of Sciences and he winner of the Medal of the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit (2000), the Medal of the Brazilian Aeronautics Order (2004), and the Award for Outstanding Researcher in the field of physics & astronomy from FAPERGS, 1998.
