Biography
Dr. de Araújo is a Professor of Physics at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Recife, Brazil. An optics expert of long standing, he has proposed in 1980 two photon absorption by a pair of different atoms, which has been verified recently. He also demonstrated frequency upconversion via energy transfer among isolated isoionic triads in doped crystals, which has again been realized lately. This discovery has led to the sub-discipline called site-selective spectroscopy. His recent work has to do with new nonlinear optical effects in organic materials. A Full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the Medal of the Brazilian National Order of Scientific Merit, and the Galileo Galilei Award.
