| Biography | | Dr. Gattass made
important contributions to the definition of new cortical areas in primates. He
describes the location, topographic organization and anatomical correlates of
various visual areas. His work has enlightened the field of visual physiology
with the description of correlates for perceptual completion, filling in and
spatial visual attention. He is Full Professor of Neurophysiology at the Inst.
of Biophysics (IBCCF), Carlos Chagas Filho, UFRJ and Vice President of the
Brazilian Academy of Science. His awards include: Annual Award, Sousa Aguiar
State Hospital, Distinguished Intern, 1970; Graduation Award, Medical School,
Fed. Univ. of Rio de Janeiro, Top 10 Award, 1971; and the Ribbon of Comendador,
National Order of Scientific Merit (ONMC), Brazil, 1996. His membership
includes: Soc. for Neurosciences, USA; Brazilian Academy of Sciences; and the
New York Academy of Sciences. |
