Biography
Dr. Barbeito Erba is the Head of the Department of Neurobiology at the Instituto Clemente Estable, in Montevideo, Uruguay. A neurobiologist, he has been looking at the effect of oxidative stress on neurons and their adaptive response. He has shown in particular how zinc-deficient superoxide dismutase induces motor neuron response. He has also ascribed a role for astrocytes in motor neuron loss in the pathology of Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis. He has further described the simultaneous release of glutamate and dopamine in basal ganglia. For these noteworthy contributions, he has been honoured with the Claude Bernard Prize and also the Award of the National System for Researchers, Uruguay.
