Biography
Dr. Cavalcante is the Head of the Laboratory of Developmental Neurobiology at the Instituto de Biofisica Carlos Chagas Filho, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She is a developmental biologist, who has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of neuroglial heterogeneity and glial-neuron interactions, particularly at the midbrain. She has contributed to our understanding of the structure and development of patterns of visual neural connections. Recently, she has looked at interactions between glial cells and the intracellular parasite Leishmania and has also demonstrated the expression of a pattern recognition receptor (mannose/fucose receptor) in Schwann cells. She is a senior member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and was honoured with the Order of Scientific Merit of Brazil.
