| Biography | | Izquierdo became a Brazilian citizen in 1981. He established major research centers at the Universities of Buenos Aires (1964) and Cordoba (1966) (of which he was later appointed honorary professor) in Argentina and in the Federal Universities of São Paulo (1975) and Rio Grande do Sul (1978), as well as the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (2004) in Brazil. He sponsored 81 theses. His students are now important professors in Brazil and Argentina. He is a member of several academies, has published over 600 papers, and received over 40 national and international awards, among which is the TWAS Award in Basic Medical Sciences in 1995. He has uncovered the main molecular mechanisms of memory formation in the hippocampus and other areas of the brain. Much of his work has important clinical applications. |
