| Biography | | Vanegas is professor of physiology, Medical School, Central Univ. of Venezuela (UCV), and teaches graduate courses at IVIC and UPO, Seville, Spain. He received his Medico-Cirujano from UCV, and MSc (1965) and PhD (1968) in brain research from Yale. At IVIC, he has been head, Neurophysiology Lab.; Chairman, Ctr. for Biophysics and Biochemistry; vice-director; director, CLAB, IVIC/UNESCO; and founding pres., QUIMBIOTEC, C.A. His membership includes: SFN; IASP; IBRO; Board of Dir., CONICIT, Venezuela; vice-pres., Univ. Iberoamericana de Postgrado, Salamanca; found. gov., ICGEB, Trieste; found. pres., AVED; member, Scientific Prog. Comm., World Congress on Pain (1996-99, 2002-05); and ACAL. He is assoc. ed. of the journal Pain. His honours include: Humboldt Research Prize; Venezuela's Orden Francisco de Miranda, Orden Andrés Bello and Orden del Libertador; and Orden Gabriela Mistral, Chile. |
