Biography
PENA, Sergio D.J. (Brazil). b.17-10-1947. MD, PhD, Professor, Department of Biochemistry & Immunology, Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Pena has pioneered human DNA studies in Brazil, shedding light on the evolutionary history and structure of Brazilian populations. He has also contributed to the population biology of Trypanosoma cruzi and the pathogenesis of Chagas disease. A member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, he has won the 2007 TWAS Prize and also the Great Cross of the National Order of Scientific Merit.
