| Biography | | Dr. Zatz is Professor
of Genetics and Director of Centre for the Study of the Human Genome, at the
University of Sao Paolo, Brazil. A molecular geneticist, Dr Zatz has mapped six
new genes associated with neuromuscular disorders and has also contributed,
through genotype-phenotype correlations, to the understanding of the
pathological mechanisms. In addition, she has also been travelling to various
parts of Brazil, studying the association of genetics with some inherited
diseases, and doing genetic counseling, thereby helping over 2000 people. A
member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, she won the 2001 L'Oreal-UNESCO
Prize for women scientists and the 2001 Claudia Prize of Brazil. She was
highlighted in the Global voices of science serial of the journal Science
(April 1, 2005 issue), where she discussed fighting genetic disease in Brazil. |
