| Biography | | Zago is president of the Brazilian National Research Council (CNPq) and physician and medical scientist known for his work in the fields of hereditary diseases of the blood (hemoglobins, clotting, thrombosis), molecular basis of cancer and human population genetics. He graduated in medicine (1970) in the School of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, Univ. of São Paulo, where he also received his MSc (1973) and PhD (1975). He did postdoctoral training at Oxford University, where he worked with David J. Wetherall's group that was establishing the molecular bases of the thalassemias. Afterwards, he returned to Brazil and started a research group that focused on the genetic bases of hematological diseases. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and received the Commend of the Brazilian Order of Scientific Merit, in August 2000. |
