| Biography | | Dr. Groot is
Permanent Secretary and Honorary Member of the Colombian Academy of Medicine.
After obtaining his MD (National University Colombia) and MPh at Harvard, he
returned to Colombia in 1943 to research tropical health problems. He focused
on T. rangeli, the cycle of this Trypanosoma in the vector and demonstrating
its lack of pathogenicity for man. Most recently, he has been concerned with
arbovirus. He helped in establishing the Universidad de los Andes. His honours
include: Abraham Horowitz Award, Pan American Health and Education Found.; Hon.
Membership, Am. Soc. Trop. and Hyg.; Donald McKay Medal, Am. Soc. Trop. and
Hyg.; Prize of the Life of a Scientist, Colombian Academy of Science, 2000;
Natl. Award of Scientific Merit; and the Colombian Assoc. for the Advancement
of Science, 2001. He is member of 10 science academies, including Spanish and
Belgian institutions. |
