| Biography | | Dr. Camargo is
Professor at the University of São Paolo and President of the Brazilian
National Research Council, Brasilia. His outstanding work has enhanced our
knowledge of the biology of trypanosomes and the malaria parasites. His
analysis of the genetic polymorphisms in the Western Amazon populations has
revealed an association between the Duffy system, as well as the EsD and Rh
loci, and susceptibility to malarial infection. His work has also highlighted
the high prevalence of asymptomatic malarial infections in native Amazonian
populations and shows how natural immunity to malaria exists among the people
of the Madeira river banks but not among dry land settlers. He is a Fellow of
the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and has received the LAFI Prize and the Great
Cross of the Order of Scientific Merit. |
