Biography
Dr. Peixoto was educated at the Engineering School of the University of Brazil (BSc, 1943; Doctorate, 1947). He is Professor at the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada. He was previously: Professor of Calculus and Rational Mechanics at the Engineering School of the University of Brazil; Visiting Scientist at the University of Chicago from 1949-51; Co-Founder of the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro in 1952; Visiting Scientist at Princeton from 1957-58; Professor at Brown in Providence, Rhode Island from 1964-70; Professor at the University of São Paulo, Brazil from 1972-78; President of the National Research Council from 1979-80; and President of the Academia Brasileira de Ciencias from 1981-91. He was awarded the Moinho Santista Prize for Mathematics, Brazil, in 1969. He is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
