| Biography |
| Pacifico concluded her PHD at IMPA in 1980. She is full professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Her first work of high impact was published by Topology in 1986 where it introduced what is known today as the singular horseshoe, and that has become one of the most relevant passage mechanisms from simple to chaotic dynamics. Motivated by the famous chaotic attractor of Lorenz, which models weather forecasts, she introduced, with Morales and Pujals, the notion of singular hyperbolic nature, which characterized the groups that are strongly transitive for tri-dimensional flows such as chaotic attractors or repellers. In other words, these groups are similar to the butterfly of Lorenz. She had 3 doctorate degree students and organized several scientific meetings. She is a titular member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. |
