| Biography | | Dr. Viana is Professor of Mathematics and Deputy Director of IMPA-Rio de Janeiro, where he has been a researcher since obtaining his doctoral degree in 1990. He has written some fifty research papers, covering several areas of Dynamical Systems and Ergodic Theory. He was Plenary Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Berlin in 1998, Invited Speaker at the ICM, Zurich in 1994, and Plenary Speaker at the International Congress of Mathematical Physics, Paris in 1994. He was awarded the UMALCA Prize, the Great Cross of Scientific Merit, President of Brazil, and the Ramanujan Prize. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Scientific Coordinator of the Latin American Mathematical Union (UMALCA). Since 2006, he is a member of the Executive Committte of the International Mathematical Union (IMU). |
