| Biography | | Dr. do Carmo obtained his Engineering degree at the University of Recife, Brazil and his PhD in 1963 at UC Berkeley. He is Professor and Research Scientist at the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (IMPA) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil since 1966. He has held previous teaching positions at the University of Recife and the University of Brasilia as well as visiting positions at the University of Ceará in Fortaleza, Brazil, and the University of California, Berkeley. His honours include: National Prize of Science and Technology, CNPq, Brazil, 1984; Guggenheim Fellow, 1967-69; TWAS Prize in Mathematics, 2002; Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico, Brazil, 1995; and Honorary Doctorate from the Federal University of Alagoas, 1991. He is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. |
