Biography
Dr. Lewowicz was an undergraduate at the Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de Montevideo and obtained his PhD (Brown University) in 1966. He is Professor at the Instituto de Matematica y Estadistica R. Laguardia, Faculty of Engineering (IMERL), Universidad de la Republica, Montevideo. He was previously Professor at the Univ. of Buenos Aires, Univ. of Sao Paulo and Univ. Simon Bolivar, Caracas. He has gained an international reputation as a mathematician who has contributed to the area of research concerned with the interaction between the topology of space and motion. His major research focus is on the classification of discrete expansive systems on surfaces and the systematic use of Lyapunov functions (and quadratic forms) to study expansivity and other dynamical properties. He was honoured as Research Scientist, 1st category, by the Fondo Nacional de Investigadores, Montevideo.
