Biography
Dr. Palis is Professor at the Instituto Nacional de Matemática Pura e Aplicada in Rio de Janeiro, Vice President of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and President of TWAS. He obtained his PhD in 1967 at UC Berkeley. He has been serving in various capacities at the International Mathematical Union, the International Council for Science and the Scientific Councils of ICTP, ETH-Zurich, and Collège de France. He holds several honorary degrees. His awards include: Moinho Santista, Brazil; Brazilian National Prize for Science and Technology; Interamerican Prize for Science; Prêmio México de Ciência e Tecnologia; and Grand-Croix National Order of Scientific Merit, Brazil. His membership includes the Brazilian, Latin American, Indian, Chilean, Mexican, French, European and US Natl. Academy of Sciences.
