| Biography | | Dr. de Figueiredo is known for his contributions to mathematics, particularly the characterization of Hilbert spaces, studies of solutions of superlinear elliptic problems, criticalities for Hamiltonean elliptic systems, superlinear elliptic systems, maximum principles for non-cooperative systems in biology, and applications of variational methods to Ambrosetti-Prodi type problems. He became a Civil Engineer in 1956 at the Natl. School of Engg., Univ. of Brazil. He obtained his MS (1958) and PhD (Mathematics, 1961), at the Courant Institute, New York University. He is Professor of Mathematics, Univ. Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), Campinas, Brazil. His awards include: Guggenheim Fellow; Fellowship of Academic Recognition, UNICAMP; and the Grã-Cruz, Natl. Order of Scientific Merit, 1995. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the São Paulo Academy of Sciences. |
