| Biography | | Dr. Marchesin obtained his MSc (Mathematics, 1971) at the Pontificia Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), Brazil and his PhD (Mathematics, 1978) at the Courant Inst. of Mathematical Sciences (CIMS), New York. He is Professor at the Natl. Inst. of Pure and Applied Mathematics, Rio de Janeiro. He was previously Professor at PUC/RJ. He is a leader in the area of nonlinear theory of partial differential equations and “Systems of Conservation Laws.” His research has been concerned with these laws which govern a variety of physical phenomena such as fluid dynamics, chromatography, traffic flows, and enhanced oil recovery from petroleum wells. He has been awarded the Comendador, Ordem Nacional do Mérito Científico, Brazil in 2002. He is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the American Mathematics Society. |
