| Biography | | Maculan is professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Computer Science of the Graduate School and Research in Engineering (COPPE), Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil. He has supervised over 50 PhD theses and 120 MSc dissertations; was former president of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (1990-1994); served as National Secretary for Higher Education (2004-2007); and, recently, was State Secretary for Education in Rio de Janeiro (2007-2008). He was awarded several honorary degrees, such as: Chevalier dans l'Ordre National du Mérite, France; Grand-Croix National Order of Scientific Merit, Brazil; and Docteur Honoris Causa de l'Université Paris 13, France. His membership includes the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering (Brazil), and the European Academy of Arts, Sciences and Humanities (Paris, France). |
