Biography
Dr. Urrutia-Fucugauchi is Professor and Director of the Instituto de Geofisica, Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico, Mexico City. Professor Urrutia's early paleomagnetic studies, and studies of magnetic fabric have been seminal. His studies on the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary and the Chicxulub impact crater have given us information about the size, structure and age of the crater. He has also helped in the study of the historical trace metal fluxes in the Mexico City Metropolitan Zone as evidenced by a sedimentary record from a nearby lake, and shown that atmospheric deposition, weathering of bedrock and soil within the watershed and authigenic production, are the most important processes that explain the trace metal distribution in the site. He is a Fellow of the American States Organization and Mexican Academy of Sciences, and winner of the Mexican Academy's Science Award.
