Biography
Verez Bencomo is director of the Center for Synthetic Antigens in the Faculty of Chemistry, University of Havana, Cuba. He obtained his PhD in 1983 at Orleans University, France. He has been working on synthetic carbohydrate chemistry and biochemistry for 27 years. His most outstanding achievement is the development and production of the first economically viable and widely applied human synthetic carbohydrate-based vaccine against Haemophilus Influenzae type b. Elected to the Cuban Academy of Sciences, he has won the Academy's medal five times, the Carlos J. Finlay Medal and "La Giraldilla" distinction from the City of Havana. He became a laureate in the health category of the Tech Museum for Innovation, San José, California, USA, in 2005. He also won the Gold Medal from the World Intellectual Properties Organization.
