| Biography | | Professor Garbarino
is known for his work in the chemistry of natural products, specifically for
products derived from the native Chilean flora. Among his achievements is the
structural delucidation of alkaloids, terpenoids and glycosidic
phenylpropanoids and the chemistry and biology of Lithraea caustica
(Anacardiaceae) and Calceolaria sessilis (Scrophulariaceae). He has also
systematically studied compounds isolated from continental and antarctic
lichens. He is Full Professor of Chemistry at the Univ. Técnica Federico Santa Maria, Valparaíso, Chile. He has received the Exact Sciences and
Technology Prize, Town Hall of Valparaiso, Chile, the Natl. Natural Sciences
Prize, Chile, and the Science and Technology Divulgation Prize, Chile. He is
also a member of the Latin American Academy of Sciences and the Chilean Academy
of Sciences. |
