| Biography | | Professor Fernandez is known for his prediction of the existence of the Kuiper comet belt around Neptune, proved by later observations. He has also proposed that the major planets had migrated to their present positions during the lifetime of the Solar system. In recognition of his signal contributions to astronomy, the International Astronomical Union named the asteroid 5996 'Julioangel' after him. He is Professor of Astronomy at the Faculty of Sciences, Montevideo. He held research fellowships at the Madrid Observatory, Max-Plank-Institut für Aeronomie, Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik, and was Visiting Professor at the Valongo Observatory, Rio de Janeiro. He has integrated several consulting bodies on matters related to science and technology and is a member of the International Astronomical Union and the Latin American Academy of Sciences. |
