| Biography | | Dr. Herrera-Estrella
is the Director of the Plant Biotechnology Unit, Centre for Research and
Advanced Studies (CINVESTAV), Irapuato, Mexico. He has made pioneering
contributions in the historical perspective and development of genetically
engineered plants, and the study of gene expression in them. He has paid
special attention to transgenic plants for tropical regions, developing and
transferring them to the small farmer, and has written a comprehensive and
analytical review on genetically modified crops and the developing world. A
much cited author, he is a Fellow of the Academia Ciencias Mexico, a Foreign
Associate of the US National Academy of Science, a Howard Hughes Medical
Institute International Fellow, and has won the 1989 UNESCO Natural Sciences Prize. |
