| Biography |
| Dr. Franco is a renowned soil scientist who has been exploring biological mechanisms involved in legume symbiosis. He developed technologies to limit the consumption of fossil fuel and other natural resources, resulting in substantial crop yield increases for small farmers in South America and technologies for low cost land reclamation. He is currently Subsecretary, Research Units Co-ordination, Ministry of Science and Technology, Brazil. His previous positions include: Soil Scientist, Director of Agrobiology and Scientific Director, Agricultural Research Corporation (EMBRAPA); and Consultant, Rio de Janeiro Foundation for Science and Technology. His awards include: Vallêe of Biotechnology Award, FENABIO; Agricultura Real Award; Most outstanding scientist in agricultural science in Brazil; and Award for Technical Excellence, EMBRAPA. He is Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. |
